Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer reconstruction can be performed at the time of cancer removal or years down the line. It is fully covered by insurance, including symmetry procedures to match the unaffected breast to the side treated for cancer. During the first consult, we will discuss your treatment plan and the initial stage of reconstruction and develop a reconstruction plan that matches your goals.
While there are many ways to approach breast reconstruction, the goal for all is the same: to safely and effectively restore patient quality of life. Generally, breast reconstruction can be categorized in two ways: implant-based and free-flap-based reconstruction. The first stage for either is often placement of a tissue expander (a type of temporary breast implant that can be inflated over time). This helps maintain and develop breast skin to be used for reconstruction.
-
Implant-Based Reconstruction
This breast reconstruction option uses advanced implant techniques to offer symmetry and volume. The outcome is a restored silhouette and renewed confidence. This procedure is ideal for breast cancer survivors who did not receive radiation. It may be an option for patients who received radiation, but will require an in- depth discussion with Dr. Wisecarver to discern if it is the best reconstruction plan.
-
Free-Flap (Own Tissue) Reconstruction
In this procedure, we rebuild breast tissue [RG3] using the patient’s own tissue. This technique provides a soft, natural-looking, long-lasting reconstruction with less long-term maintenance. This method is ideal for patients who have received radiation because it uses healthy, non-irradiated skin to reconstruct the breast.
-
Congenital Breast Anomalies
Congenital breast anomalies, such as tubular breast deformity and Poland syndrome, are insurance-covered procedures that correct breast asymmetry to restore the physical appearance of the breasts, improve emotional well-being, and renew comfort in one’s body.

Gender-Affirming Top Surgery
At Renew, we are happy to offer surgery for patients seeking gender-affirming care. These procedures are often covered by insurance and are tailored to individual patient goals, but usually consist of double-incision mastectomy with nipple relocation for female-to-male affirmation and breast augmentation for male-to-female affirmation.

Other reconstructive procedures
Other Reconstruction Procedures
-
Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
Complex abdominal wall hernia repair is a procedure we perform in tandem with our general surgery colleagues. In the event of massive ventral hernia, some patients are candidates for abdominal wall reconstruction via muscle advancement and placement of a surgical mesh to fix the hernia and decrease the likelihood of recurrence.
-
Burn Reconstruction
Burns are large, physically and emotionally traumatizing wounds that limit function and drastically alter appearance. We offer treatment of acute burns and complex burn reconstruction to enhance post-burn functionality. Some reasons to consider a consult would be unsightly scarring, burns involving the eyelids, face, or hands, and burn scars that cross a joint and limit mobility.
-
Congenital Abnormalities (Pediatric “Lumps and Bumps”)
We love kids at Renew and are happy to address your concerns about your child’s cysts, accessory fingers, skin tags, and “weird spots.” Pediatric care is a passion of Dr. Wisecarver’s and was a cornerstone in his training.
-
Oncologic Reconstruction
A broad category, oncologic reconstruction pertains to any defect created in the removal of cancer, including on the chest, arms, hands, legs, or face. Our goal is to rebuild and restore areas affected by cancer treatments to provide improved functionality and a natural appearance.
-
Scar Revision
How scars form and how apparent they become is affected by a number of factors, including the presence of infection/bacteria, trauma to the surrounding area, and manner of closure (type of stitches and how long they were left in for). If you are unhappy with a prominent scar, there’s a good chance it can be improved upon with a scar revision.
-
Skin Cancer Resection and Reconstruction
Skin cancer is prevalent around the world and on the rise—even in Alaska. At Renew, we strive to cure skin cancers by removing them in their entirety while minimizing the deformity caused by resection. This is especially important in cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face, nose, and ears, and functionally important areas like the hands.
